Found a walkthru but it had nothing to help here. It's just this one thing I haven't been able to figure out. I've done everything else in the Lantern, all levels. So what's the deal here? Do either of the portals have a connection with that second stand-alone room? Because that's where I want to go. Nipped back up and tried that portal again same thing. All that second portal does is send me to the corridor with the skulls, and right onto the plate that triggers them. Stood in front, made a block, and pushed it past the portal onto the plate. Noticed there was a plate behind that first portal. Of course I restored (great believer in Save Early, Save Often). Can't find a way into that second room, or out of this area at all. One has the talking book been there, got the spell. The first one sends me outside the regular map to an area with two stand-alone rooms.
